Netanyahu Delays Gaza Governance, Security Plans Until After Election

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed several security and administrative initiatives concerning Gaza’s future until after Israel’s October 27 election, including plans to deploy an international force and bring in a committee to oversee the territory, according to reports.

The delays include a decision to halt travel arrangements for approximately 7,000 Palestinians from Gaza who were expected to travel to Egypt for police training, despite receiving approval from Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security agency.

The measures are part of “a series of steps concerning the future of the Gaza Strip that the Israeli political leadership has postponed until after the election.”

Other postponed initiatives include preparations for establishing a new city in Rafah, deploying an international stabilization force in Gaza and bringing the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza into the territory.

Separately, reports indicated that Shin Bet had granted security clearance to between 5,000 and 7,000 Palestinians being considered for police training in Egypt.

The agency’s responsibilities were restricted to screening the names submitted by US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, with no authority to determine whether the candidates would be permitted to travel.
