Israel Set to Release South African Global Sumud Flotilla Activists

(MENAFN) After several days held in an Israeli prison, South African members of the Global Sumud Flotilla are set for release and will return to South Africa via Jordan, the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation announced Monday.

In an official statement, the department confirmed Israel’s decision: "We have received confirmation that the individuals in question are scheduled to be released from detention and will be repatriated, departing via Jordan tomorrow morning."

Among those detained was Mandla Mandela, grandson of the late former President Nelson Mandela. The group had traveled to Gaza aboard the flotilla to deliver vital humanitarian aid to Palestinians suffering from severe food shortages.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola praised the combined efforts of local and global actors that led to their impending release.

The Global Sumud Flotilla consisted of nearly 50 civilian vessels with roughly 500 activists from multiple countries, who were held in Israeli waters before their detention by authorities.
